Apple updated the MacBook Pro 13 and 15-inch with TouchBar today. While these updates are mostly spec bumps, Apple also took a moment to talk to the new Butterfly Keyboard in these updated laptops.
You might remember a few weeks ago where I really discussed how bad the keyboard is. While, I do like the feel of the keyboard, I don’t trust them.
To that end, Apple has done a couple of things to improve the way many might feel about these keyboards. For one, they have extended the repair program to cover all generations of the Butterfly switch. The MacBook Pro and Air from last year are now covered.
Apple has also improved the service system if your laptop breaks down. They drastically increased the speed at which your system will be returned to you, often just the next day. You won’t have to be without your laptop for a week now.
Finally, while they aren’t calling it a fourth generation model, Apple has started to use a “new material” which should improve the reliability of the keys. Apple didn’t provide anymore details, but I’m anxious to see what the guys at IFixIt find.
All of this does help give me a more faith in the laptops. Sadly, there isn’t much there. People don’t want to get a laptop that will break down. I haven’t heard as many complaints about the 3rd generation, and if they have finally managed to make these work well, I’ll be excited.
Still, I’m going to hold out for the next round of MacBook Airs once they hopefully, maybe, switch to their own chips.
What do you think? Have you had any issues with your butterfly keyboard? Are you willing to give this new model a try?
