Recently, I updated our home wifi to the Eero 6 plus wifi mesh system. Sometime last year, my house experienced a power outage. When the power went out, it took my previous Orbi Mesh Wifi 5 system.
I had gotten the Orbi a few years before, and it had served us well, but it was expensive. So when I set out to replace it, I looked for a router that would be easy to install, provide fast wifi for our growing wifi system, and offer stability while not breaking the bank. I ended up picking the Eero 6+ wifi mesh system.
Eero 6 Plus Specifications and What They Mean
The eero 6+ specifications provide a robust set of features for the cost.
The eero 6 Plus system offers Gigabit speeds. A few years ago, we moved from Comcast’s terrible cable internet. While Comcast had good speeds, they had data caps that we continued to breach. In 2021 when I chatted with a Comcast representative about how data caps were a terrible idea during a pandemic, the representative told me that the company didn’t consider us in a pandemic anymore. Hmm
Luckily, another company, Frontier, soon completed expanding its fiber network in our neighborhood. Not only did I move away from Comcast, but they offered Gigabit speeds for thirty dollars less than the lesser speeds Comcast offered. Check if Frontier is available in your area.
At the time, I didn’t want to spend the money to upgrade my Wifi system that still offered decent speed. It wasn’t the fastest, but it still worked. Once the power outages happened and I needed a new system, picking the Eero 6+ three-pack was easy.
Wifi 6 offers more speed and efficiency than the previous wifi specs. So not only do wifi six devices get faster wifi speeds, but more devices can connect to the system before you start to feel a slowdown.
The Eero 6+ offers a Dual-band mesh system as well. There are two major network bands that wifi systems offer. 2.4 GHz offers a wider range but slower connections, while 5 GHz offers faster speed, but you need to be closer to the connection to get it. Many systems offer two different wifi’s to achieve this. You might see it when you try to connect your iPhone to a wifi network, and you see BounceHouseWIFI and BounceHouseWIFI-5GHz. Then you must decide which to connect to or connect to both and let your device figure it out. The Eero projects one Wifi name, automatically connecting your device to the better band.
With Eero, you can have multiple Wifi hotspots throughout your house. Eero’sTrueMesh technology will route your device to the best hub for connection strength and speed so that you never see a dead spot and don’t notice any slowdowns. It all happens without you having to do anything, and it has been working great for me.
If you use Amazon’s Alexa system, the eero 6+ also acts as a smart home hub. This allows you to connect some smart home devices that might have come with a hub without needing the plug. The eero would act as the hub. But to achieve this, you have to use Amazon’s smart home service.
I’ve stayed away from Amazon’s smart home offerings because of all the ads they throw at you. Also, since I set my home up with Apple’s HomeKit , I didn’t want to mix smart homes.
Amazon and eero have designed some Amazon Echo devices as additional mesh network spots. So if you have an eero system and install a new echo dot, it will also act as a wifi hub. So you might only need to buy a two-pack instead of a three if you already have a Dot.
Installing the Eero 6 Plus Wifi Mesh Network
Our home was built in 2020, so we had the luxury of having ethernet cables installed throughout the house. I didn’t know when we moved in, though, that the ethernet cables led to a junction box in our closet and didn’t have any connectors.
So when I began looking at new router options, I also wanted to build out the ethernet system in the house. I learned how to splice connectors onto cables and how to figure out which line went where.
Once I had the ethernet in place, I installed Eero 6 in the house. Installing the Eero system was a breeze.
To install, simply download the Eero app on your device, which will guide you through everything. I bought the three-pack, and each unit is the same. You can pick any unit as the base station when setting up your new Wifi system. Plug the unit into power, your internet modem and the app will do the rest.
Setting up the other nodes is simple once you have the first one installed. The app will help you determine if the place you intend to install the extender is best. Plug it into power, and open up the app again. At the top of the app screen, there’s a Plus Button press that. Then select Add or replace eero devices. Then press the add eero device button and follow the instructions.
All-in-all, I had an easy time setting up the eero mesh wifi system. Since I installed the ethernet ports and cable, I installed the eero base stations by those ports. Once I set up the units, I plugged them into the ethernet cable. Ethernet cables provide more reliability and speed than wifi, so if you can plug them into ethernet, I recommend doing that. However, it isn’t necessary.
This summer, after a year of using my eero, we added to our porch outside, and I noticed that the Wifi signal didn’t penetrate the brick walls very well. We had a dead spot. I found a good deal on an eero 6 extender and added it to my mesh system with ease. It works great, even though it is from an older generation.
Results for the Eero 6 Dual-Band Mesh Network
I haven’t had any issues since I installed my eero mesh system. My speeds have been very fast.
Before I bought my eero 6 plus mesh system, I worried since Amazon acquired the company. I’m not anti-Amazon (I buy more than my fair share of stuff from them), but I did worry about my data getting targeted with ads. Luckily, I haven’t noticed any.
The eero also offers a paid subscription with some extra perks, and some things I don’t like are limited behind eero Plus. Things like content filters are hidden behind this paywall, which seems like something that could become important to families. However, it does come with a VPN and 1Password.
eero Plus cost $99 a year or $9.99 a month.
