Intel announced new CPU chips today, Sunny Cove but does this news mean anything to the Mac?
Sunny Cove is a new micro architecture built on a smaller 10 nano meter size. Generally, the smaller the chip size, the faster and more power efficient the chip can be. The processes and electrons have less space to travel to which speeds things up.
Intel hopes that these will be “deeper, wider, and smarter” chips, meaning that it will provide that better performance with reduced power, and will have a focus on AI, cryptography, and machine learning in general.
So these new chips, that are projected to come out next year could boost the speed of the Macs. I wouldn’t turn my nose up to an iMac running on these chips at all.
I would hesitate to buy it though.
Intel has been notoriously bad about actually producing these things that they have claimed. In fact, Intel claimed back in 2015 that they would have a 10nm chip and they still haven’t produced it.
I’m not saying that this won’t come out. What I am saying is that Intel has been hit by setback after setback while Apple has come out of the park swinging.
As I’ve mentioned of the iPad Pro and the A12X, Apple has really closed the gap on the portable processor. The A12X is a 7 nano meter chip that has 8 cores. While I would expect the new Intel chips to be faster, I’m not sure how long that will be the case.
I have to wonder how much longer Apple will depend on Intel for its chips at all. I don’t think that next year is the year that Apple moves to A series chips in the Mac, but I do think it will be coming eventually now.
Still, I’m in the need of a new Mac, so regardless of what comes out next year, I’ll probably dive in.
What do you think? Are you excited about the new Intel chips? Do you wish Apple would just skip them and move to their own? Let me know in the comments, or hit me up on Twitter.
