Wow, that is a quick turnaround compared to normal iPhone events, but yesterday Apple unveiled the newest iPhones in the line at the company’s Far Out Apple Event. When they announced the newest iPhones, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, they also sprung the release date of two days later for us to order and a week (or more for the iPhone 14 Plus).

Around this time of year, I always get asked, Which iPhone should I get? or Which iPhone 14 should I get?

The iPhone Most People Should Get

I think the iPhone 13 is the iPhone that most people should get. You might be wondering, is the iPhone 14 better than the 13? It is the newest model iPhone, after all. Well, the answer to that is tricky.

You see, Apple bragged about putting the iPhone 13 Pro’s system on a chip in the new iPhone 14; however, the chip from the iPhone 13 Pro line only differed from the chip in the iPhone 13 by one graphics core. Otherwise, the phones were mostly the same speeds. If you have an iPhone 13, I don’t think upgrading to the standard iPhone 14 would be the smartest move at all.

But the iPhone 14 does do some things better. The cameras on the iPhone 14 are now better than they were on the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 is basically a repackaged iPhone 13 Pro without the Pro Motion display, the Stainless Steel frame, and the telephoto lens camera. But Apple also added Crash Detection and Satellite communication to the iPhone 14. But I don’t think those improvements are enough for most people.

Plus, the iPhone 13 comes in more color options.

Which iPhone Has The Best Cameras?

Like always, I think the Pro model phone has the best cameras. This year is no different, with Apple bringing in a lens that takes 4x the megapixels as the year before. But what Apple has done is meld those megapixels so that the phone is producing a 12-megapixel image still. This should increase the detail.

But Apple didn’t stop there. It also developed a software-like zoom, by just focusing on the center 12-megapixels and cutting out the rest. This gives the phone a 2x digital zoom that doesn’t lose quality, the standard 3x zoom that has been on the iPhone for a few models now, and the digital zoom beyond that, which will lose details as you go.

This year, there is no difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max cameras either.

iPhone With The Best Screen

The iPhone 14 Pro wins again.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with the best screens on an iPhone yet. They retain the Pro Motion from the iPhone 13 Pro but allow the screen resolution to clock down even lower than before. This will allow the screen to stay on even when not in use. Your wallpaper and any widgets you’ve put on your lock screen in iOS 16 will show up the entire time.

But there’s also this Dynamic Island coming with the new Pro models of phones which seems awesome. Instead of the notch at the top, Apple has managed to shrink and hide the sensors FaceID uses to a couple of cutouts. Around this, Apple has designed a system around the cutouts to give users some control over apps and notifications. It looks really smooth.

I Want The Biggest iPhone

This year, users that want the biggest iPhone will have two choices! If you want the best and biggest iPhone you can get right now, you’ll be looking at the Pro Max version. It has the best screen and cameras and is the fast iPhone made yet. But it will cost you.

If you want a large device, but you don’t want to pay that much for it, Apple has launched the iPhone 14 Plus. It is the same size 6.7-inch screen, as the past few Max-sized devices, but the Plus doesn’t have Pro Motion or an always-on display. Still, you can save some money going with the Plus over the Max, as the Plus starts at $899 versus $1099.

I Want the Smallest iPhone

If you want the smallest iPhone, you can still get the iPhone 13 Mini, which I don’t think is that bad of a deal. Since the iPhone 14 line didn’t upgrade that much, in my opinion, the iPhone 13 Mini is still a good value. Of course, it has the worst battery life of most of the phones out there, but the portability makes up for it.

I Need the Longest Lasting iPhone

If you need the longest-lasting iPhone is interesting because of what Apple said in their video yesterday. They claimed that the iPhone 14 Plus had the longest battery life of any iPhone yet, but according to the tech specs on their own page, it looks like the Pro Max will get longer battery life by 3 hours. The Pro Max gets 29 hours of video playback, while the Plus only gets 26 hours.

So if you want the absolute best battery life of an iPhone, look at the 14 Pro Max. The Plus is the runner-up in the battery category for now. Once these actually get into the hands of the reviewers, things might change.

So, Which iPhone Should you get?

It’s all hard to say, but these are my recommendations. Oddly, the iPhone 14 doesn’t show up much this year. I do think it is a good phone with some new features, but it is the first of a new category of iPhone that spreads the gap between the iPhone and Pro even more than before. But if you like the iPhone 14 and need a better camera than the 13 offers, or you might be traveling somewhere without cell service, and you need satellite backup for safety, you should go with any of the iPhone 14 models instead of the 13.
