Game of Thrones has wrapped up. While I wasn’t a fan of the finale, thinking about what I would have done different has led me down a path where I’m actually starting to realize that many of the plots have wrapped up in a way that actually does make sense, but aren’t the most exciting ones.
Still, here are my top questions I still have about Game Of Thrones.
Why does anyone listen to Tyrion?
As the episode comes to a close, Tyrion has been arrested as a traitor and is then brought in front of all the important houses left in Westeros. They then ask him who should be the ruler.
Does anyone else not get it? The man has been held captive for weeks for betraying his queen. Grey Worm doesn’t even want him to talk at the meeting, but then he goes on and explains why he thinks Bran should be the King of the 7 kingdom.
Furthermore, besides being a prisoner, when was the last time that Tyrion made a good decision? I mentioned about the crypts during the battle of Winterfell, his vouching for Jaime and his sister didn’t really work out that well either.
Yet, all these people listen to him still. Now, I love Tyrion, but these moves from these smart people don’t make sense. I think this was television narrative to fit the outline Martin gave the show runners, and nothing more.
Why does Drogon burn the Iron Throne?
Okay, this one has been pretty popular.
Jon betrays Dani and stabs her in the heart. As if he can sense that his mother has been attacked, Drogon flies up to the throne room to see his mother dead.
He leans back and fires his blast at the thing that killed his mother – the Iron Throne. When I first saw this, I thought that he just missed Jon, but then Drogon blasts again and again until the throne is melted.
I can’t recall anywhere in the series where the dragons have shown that much intelligence to be able to determine that something like the Iron Throne is what caused the death of Dani.
Not only that, but the dragon had never actually seen the throne before either. So how did he know that was the root cause of everything.
Also, could he not burn Jon Snow because he was also a Targaryen? If that’s the case, I don’t feel like that was made any clearer.
Who is Jon Snow?
Jon Snow embodied a character that everyone felt was important. When the writers met with George R.R. Martin, he would agree to the series being made only if they could tell him who Jon Snow’s mother was. They guessed it (the books still haven’t actually tackled that subject I don’t think) and they got the series.
So it feels like Jon is important.
Jon has been a character that is very relatable for the entire run. He has a standard, a moral. He does what’s right, and not what he wants. Jon was killed by his own men and brought back to life. His lineage seemed like a huge point of the entire Song of Ice and Fire.
But the only thing his heritage seemed to do was help drive Daenerys mad.
I can’t help but think that he was destined for more than just to be the new Queenslayer. Maybe Martin was trying to make a point of saying that it doesn’t matter where you come from but what you do. If that’s the case, why did it matter that he came from that family instead of being the bastard son of Ned Stark? I felt like there had to be a better reason for Jon to have such a dramatic story than to just kill the queen and then go live in the north.
I felt like the writers made things even worse by leaning into his heritage as much as they did with him riding dragons. If there wasn’t going to be much of a pay off there, Jon could have stayed on the ground in the Battle for Winterfell and probably been more affective.
Of course, Martin never really did what was expected. He killed Ned in book one, Robb died at the red wedding, and so on.
Still, who is Jon Snow? And why was he really important?
What is the point of the Night’s Watch?
So Jon has been sentenced to the Night’s Watch for killing his lover/aunt/queen. If I recall correctly though, the free people are now allies and the Night King and white walkers are all destroyed.
What’s the point of the Night’s Watch now? What the men on the Night’s Watch watching? Are they protecting the realm from the cold now?
If they are just men that have a troubled past, couldn’t they do something better? Maybe they should be drafted into the army to defend the realm instead of sitting at the wall.
Why didn’t Bran do more?
Bran ends up the King of the 6 kingdoms, because he has “the most interesting story.” Bran’s story started off pretty interesting with being pushed out the window to fall to his death, only he didn’t die. Then he was destined to become the three-eyed-raven. What does the three-eyed-raven do?
It seemed like Bran was able to see into the past and the present. It also seemed like he could peer into the future as well. We never really get a grasp of what his powers are.
Bran pretty much just plops himself down and looks serious. It would have been nice of Bran to actually help out during any of the battles. Or maybe give someone a heads up that the queen was going to turn.
As it stands Bran one of two ways to me. The first, it looks like he didn’t do anything, but that he knows everything. If that’s the case, why does he need a council? The second is that he knew what was about to happen and he let it all happen. To me, this is the worse of the two options because that doesn’t really make him any better than anyone else vying for the throne.
I think it would have been better if he had given a council position to the knew king instead of becoming one himself.
Why was Bronn even in the show?
Bronn was one of my favorite characters from early in the show. He continued to be one of my most liked characters until this last season.
This season, he did nothing.
I get the Bronn isn’t going to take a side other than money. I also know that he’s not really going to risk his life unless there was much to gain, but he had such a small part this season. He had maybe a total of ten minutes of screen time.
I feel like he could have been used to greater effect. Maybe he could have done something to help one side or the other.
That said, why do they include him on the King’s council at the end? Brienne is the king’s guard, so what is he?
Did Jon Snow Abandon the Night’s Watch?
The last shot of the show has Jon Snow heading out into the northern wilderness with Tormund, Ghost, and the free people. There are no other Night’s watchmen with him.
So where is he going? Has he abandoned his post? Is John going to live with the free people and abandon his family?
Honestly, I don’t know. I hadn’t really thought about this type of life for Jon Snow after the show. I figured he would either be the King or dead. Most likely dead. I wonder if his character would have been better off sacrificing himself.
Still, here he is. Going off into the cold with his friend and his dog.
Not a bad way to end if you’re him. Not the best way to end for the audience.
