So iOS 12 has been out for a few weeks now, and while I maintain that it’s a great release, I have run into a couple of little issues that I never ran into with beta versions.

I also asked out on Twitter (@WordSmithJS) and Facebook (jswordsmith18) for anyone having any issues, and I’ve collected the ones I’ve heard a couple of times.

Installation

I’ve had a couple of friends tell me that they had an issue installing the update on their iPads.  I know that one was an older model, and one was solved.

One of my friends was having an issue updating as well, and it turned out to be a free space issue, but she never got a message saying that.  After deleting some apps, the install finally went through.

I personally haven’t had any issues updating a device to iOS 12, but I have heard from a few people that have.  Are you having any issues?

Problems with Music and Audio

I’ve had a couple of weird random issues with audio.

AirPods

My first issue dealt with AirPods.  When I was using both left and right headphone, they acted like normal.  You play music, put the headphone in and the music would shift from phone to the headphones.  When you took out one of the headphones it would pause the music.  When I wore just a single earphone, had music or a podcast going, and then took out the AirPod, the music would shift to the phone and wouldn’t pause.

A restart didn’t fix the issue, and I don’t remember it acting like this before.  I also repaired the headphones and the same thing.  The weird thing is, it’s not happening anymore.  I’m not sure what happened.

Silent music

Another time I had an issue pop up and then go away was with podcast and navigation.

I’ve never had a problem with running these two apps at the same time before, but for some reason when Navigation would interrupt the music app it would resume the audio, but nothing would sound through the car system.  I would have to rewind the audio to get the audio to come through again.

I tried the restart, but nothing fixed it.

But it only happened one time, and hasn’t happened since.

Contact confusion

More than one person as also told me about their messages going to the wrong person in their messages.

For example, my friend tried to message his dad.  He would go to message thread they had going and send him a message.  The message would then go to his mother, who had no idea what he was talking about.

I’ve seen this issue on Twitter as well, but I haven’t had the issue happen to me yet.

Still, this could be a major issue for some.  As you can see from Mary’s tweet above, Apple says its an Apple ID issue, but my friend didn’t really have any recourse to fix it.  The number on the contacts page was correct, and was even sent from the same thread they had before.

Battery Issues

I know that some owners of the new iPhone XS and XS Max are having issues with phones charging when plugged in if the screen is off.  I use a Qi charging pad and haven’t had any issues.  I don’t have any issues when I plug it into my car system either, but the screen is usually on with I plug my phone in any way.

Regardless, if you’re having this issue, there’s an update coming when 12.1 drops.  I’d say we’ll get that fix sooner rather than later, possibly mentioned at the Apple Event if it happens relatively soon.

Wrap up

I love iOS 12 but have had some weird issues popping up here and there.  Others have had a bigger issue with it than I have, and possibly a more dangerous issue as well.

I’m hoping all these bugs will be squashed by the time 12.1 drops.  If you do have any issues, make sure you let Apple know about your issue either through customer service or the feedback app if you’re on a beta.  The more information, the better.
