What a crazy week!
Not only is there a new iPhone and Apple Watch, but the new beta for iOS 12.1 came out today with evidence that there is a new fall 2018 iPad.
Then came the leaked information that GoPro is releasing a new GoPro Hero 7 today. Moments later, GoPro confirmed it themselves.
The Hero 7 will come in 3 different flavors: Black ($399), Silver ($299), and White ($199). All the new models continue the production design of the last couple of models. The ones that don’t need a case to go under water 30 feet or so. There are great for swimming, but not scuba. You’ll need a case for that.
Hero 7 Black
The Black model is by far the most enticing model. It has the best quality video (4K at 60 frames) and pictures (12mp and HDR), it can share your phones cell signal to live stream on facebook live and other live services, and it feature a new “HyperSmooth” video stabilization system. This keeps your videos looking smooth as they get jostled or pan around. The demo looks pretty cool. There are a few smaller things like being able to attach a mic to the camera.
If I were to get a new GoPro camera, this would be the one, but until the sponsors start rolling in, I’m a little strapped for cash.
(If anyone does want to sponsor the WordSmith website, shoot me an e-mail.)
If you are contemplating buying the Hero 7 black, be aware that there is a Trade Up program. If you trade in any camera, they will take $100 off your purchase of a new GoPro 7. They will cover your shipping of your old camera and once they have it, they will ship you the new one. Sounds pretty good, and I might do this in the future (once that sponsor has been found).
Hero 7 Silver
The Silver model is a step down from the black. It still has the screen on the back and can shoot 4K video, but only at 30 frames a second. The pictures top out at 10MP as well. The screen on the front of the camera that shows how many videos you’ve shot, and how much battery is left is gone.
You also can’t do the live stream from this camera.
As far as mid price range, I think this is a solid camera. If you’ve ever wanted a GoPro and you want to spend some money but not as much as going to the top level, buy it. However, if you trade in a digital camera you could get the black for the same price. I’d do that if you could.
Hero 7 white
This is a smart move for GoPro to get into the entry level range.
This camera is lacking in quality (1080p and 10mp) and features. It has the worst sensor of the three cameras and doesn’t really do much, but it’s cheap, water proof, and ready for action.
I would recommend this camera u less you’re just trying to save money, or if your unsure that you’d actually use a camera like this and want to check it out for as little money as possible, this is a good camera to check out.
Wrap up
Lots of tech news coming out today. Everyone’s trying to get their latest and greatest out for the holiday rush. Amazon released a lot of stuff today, but I haven’t had a chance to really dig through what’s there.
Do these cameras interest you? Are you planning on getting one?
