The Apple Watch turns 4 today!
It was on this day in 2015 that the Apple Watch came out, and it wasn’t long after that the most personal device ever went on to dominate the wearable industry.
Wait
The summer before the Apple Watch was announced, I had a Fitbit. It was my fourth or fifth fitness tracker. The first one I had washed, the second one I lost in a parking lot somewhere. I was finally rocking the bracelet kind, but I don’t remember which model it was.
I do remember that it was leaving a rash on my wrist though.
I returned the device to FitBit and got a return on it, and I wondered what I was going to do next. I really wanted another tracker, but I heard that Apple was coming out with one sometime soon.
Should I just wait to see what Apple did or should I jump to another tracker.
So I waited.
It wasn’t too long after but Apple finally announced the Apple Watch as a thing in September of 2014 and that it would be shipping the next year.
So I waited.
and waited.
Obsessed
I really became obsessed with the Apple Watch after it was announced and between when it was finally released. I would scour the rumors sites looking for more information. I checked out the fitness blogs when something about it was posted.
I was more hyped for it than any other Apple product that I can remember, and that’s saying something since I’ve started an entire blog which is pretty much based around Apple (that’s not my intent, I’d liked to cover more technology and media).
Ordering
I planned out what I was going to buy, by trying all the bands on with a website I can’t remember. You chose which model you wanted and could then change the band to see how it looked.
I was originally going to get the Apple Watch with stainless steel and the white band, but the price was too much.
Then I thought about the Sport model with the white band, and that’s what I was going to go with. As the day came and I changed my mind because I wanted a little pop with my band. I ended up going with the Blue Sports band and my Girlfriend wanted the pink one.
I woke up at
The Day
I remember tracking the device as it was loaded onto a truck and sent to my apartment. Once it was delivered, I took my lunch break to go home and set it up before coming back. I had opted for the Apple Watch Sport with the blue band while my girlfriend (and now my wife) ordered the Sport with the pink band.
Her’s didn’t ship for weeks after mine, and I felt pretty guilty about it.
I didn’t feel bad enough to not tear into the packaging and slap the thing on my wrist like it was a slap bracelet from the 90s.
The setup took forever. I figured it was just because I was so excited, but really it was a slow device.
Was It Love?
I took to the Apple Watch pretty quickly, but it wasn’t everything that I hoped it would be. There were still software flaws, the thing was really slow and apps were terrible. Still, it did most of the stuff I wanted it to do. it tracked Fitness, it notified you, it could pay for stuff.
But I wouldn’t have recommended it to many people back then. I didn’t think that the price was right for what you got. Everyone was asking me about it, and my standard answer was to wait.
Fixing the Problems
I was right too. Generation 2 fixed just about everything. The 2nd generation was much faster, it had a GPS chip, they would go on to add LTE.
Now, the Apple Watch is a great wrist device. It has even saved lives. My wife was even able to track her heart when she was having heart issues a few months ago.
It has become a great device and there is still so much room to grow.
So Happy Birthday Apple Watch!
