a pair of AirPod 2s on a desk with an iPad

According to a new post on 9to5Mac.com, Apple has been granted a patent today to that could deal with the future of the AirPods.

The patent seems to hint that Apple is looking into making the AirPods independent of being a left or right ear.  In other words, either one could go in either ear and the AirPods would be smart enough to figure out which ear it is in.

As 9to5mac mentions, this could translate to an easier manufacturing process, which could allow them to manufacture them more quickly.

That’s not the most interesting piece of the news though.

The AirPods should include some type of biometric sensor, probably a heart rate sensor.  To get a good sensing, the sensor will need to be pretty snug in the ear.  This leads to the most interesting part to me: the improved fit.

Apple thinks that the AirPods will fit most people, and while they do fit me, I’ve heard many people have problems with them.  The patent uses form to almost fit the AirPods to the ear.

If they can pull this off, I’d imagine that it would allow the AirPods to do even more than they do now.  This could help bring in some form of noise cancelation.  At the least, if could fit more ears and probably improve the sound and volume out of the device.

Of course, these are just ideas that have been patented.  It doesn’t mean that they are coming in the next release of AirPods (if there are any).  Still, a form-fitting AirPod sounds pretty cool.
