It’s amazing what people are capable of.

When Apple released the updated Shortcuts app, I wonder if they had it in mind that someone would create a shortcut for when you get pulled over by the police.

Redditor, Robert Petersen of Arizona built just that.

“I have noticed in reading news articles and seeing reports on TV that in many cases you end up with police saying one thing happened and the citizen being pulled over saying another,” Petersen told USA TODAY. “And how do you determine truth? Sometimes the police have body cams, sometimes not, and even when they do it’s not always released in a timely manner.”

Peterson says in USA Today Article

While it is a sad state of affairs where we have to even hold the police accountable (I have friends that are officers, and I know they do great work, but they aren’t the only ones out there) for a minor traffic stop, I think an app like this could go a far way to keep people save.

Again, I don’t want to get into the political nature of these issues.  I know there are good cops and bad cops, just like I know there are two sides to every story.  However, I think apps like this will help hold both sides accountable.

The bases for this Shortcuts workflow is you start the shortcut, and it will dim your phone, turn on do not disturb, message a contact that you chose when setting up the app that you are getting pulled over.  The app will then start to record using the front-facing camera, which it will it will then save to your cloud drives, and text to the contacts you chose when starting up.

My fear is that this app will be used and the police will feel threatened by being watched.  However, if they are doing things by the book, they should have nothing to worry about.  The same goes for the user.

I wish that we could all just understand each other and get along, but until then, I don’t think having more data would be a bad thing in any heated situation.

Get the Shortcut here.

There are some great Shortcuts groups out there, try joining one and see what cool things people are coming up with.  I’m currently in this one on Facebook
