AirPods 2

Hello, and welcome to the first Tech Tip Tuesday, a (hopefully) weekly article with a quick little tip and maybe a video, to help you get the most out of your devices. Today’s tip is changing the AirPods double tap.

AirPods 2
The new AirPods

Today’s TTT features changing the double tap controls on your AirPods. When you first set up your 1st generation AirPods double tapping either of your airpods will engage Siri.

That’s great, but you might want something different than Siri. I currently have mine set up to engage Siri on the right ear, but if I double tap on the left it skips the currently playing song.

With the gen 2 AirPods coming in the next day or so, you’ll probably want to fine tune what the double taps do, since these will feature “Hey Siri” without having to tap.

To Change the double tap feature

  1. Go to Setting.
  2. Select BlueTooth.
  3. Hit the i button next to your AirPods (your AirPods will need to be connected).
  4. In the middle of the page there are two boxes. The title says Double-Tap On AirPod, and you’ll have a Left and Right options.
  5. Now pick what you’d like to happen when you double tap that ear. Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track, or Off.

Pick what you’d like to do, and you can change what each ear does.

  • The Settings App
  • Select BlueTooth
  • The information button next to your airpods
  • Pick which ear’s function you’d like to change
  • Pick the double type function on your AirPods

Wrap Up

That’s how you update the double tap feature on your AirPods. It might come in handy, especially if you have a new pair coming. As I mentioned, I set mine up so that the right ear is Siri and the left is next track. Once my 2nd gen AirPods come in I’ll need to figure out what I’m going to change it to. I’m thinking I’ll change the right ear to Next and the left to pause/play. When I have only 1 AirPod in, it’s usually the right one so it’ll be nice to have the Next Track option there.

That’s all for this week’s Tech Tip Tuesday. Are there any tips that you’d like to see? Let me know in the comments. Also, let me know how you plan to set your ups, I could use the suggestion.
